Lucedale— For the first time since 1991 the George County Rebels defeated the Wayne County War Eagles 14-13 in overtime Friday night at Gill-Martin Stadium.
The War Eagles had won 15 consecutive contests against the Rebels heading into the contest.
The defenses dominated all night as the only score of the game through three quarters was a 35-yard pick six by the War Eagles Steve Morgan. The Rebels tied it on a 4-yard run by Gage Reeves that capped off a 96-yard drive with 6:52 left to go in the game.
Neither team could score and the game went into overtime. Wayne County scored first on a 5-yard run by Zay Owens but a bad snap led to a missed extra point by the War Eagles.
An unsportsmanlike penalty on the Rebels pushed them back to the 25-yard line but Reeves hit Marlin Odom with a 15-yard touchdown pass and Layton Fryfogle’s extra point gave the Rebels the win.
The GCHS defense created a trio of turnovers as DJ McNair had an interception while leading tackler Blaine Greene and Layton Hyatt had fumble recoveries.
The Rebels improve to 4-1 on the season and host Hattiesburg next week.
Brandon 35, Gulfport 20
A pair of teams suddenly going in much different directions four weeks into play faced off Friday night, and the current routes for each continued.
The home-standing Bulldogs reeled off their third straight win and the Admirals suffered their third straight loss when the dust settled. Brandon, which lost its first two games of the year, now stands 3-2 while Gulfport, which started the year at 2-0, now sits 2-3.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 lead early and never trailed.
Dez Smith had a pair of scoring runs for GHS and Nico Williams found Cameron Joseph on a 67-yard touchdown pass. Williams finished with 205 yards passing and Joseph had seven catches for 141 yards.

Harrison Central 23, Mendenhall 6
The Red Rebels remained unbeaten and moved to 4-0 with a big win over the visiting Tigers in Lyman Friday night.
Harrison Central two-sport standout Tri Gaughf, the Red Reb quarterback, threw for 111 yards and a touchdown while running for another score in the win. Jaden Eckford added over 100 yards on the ground and a touchdown as well in the winning effort.
Pass Christian 41, Northeast Jones 3
The Pirates bounced back from their first loss of the season to pound the Tigers in a big Homecoming outing.
Pass quarterback Ladd Scriber tossed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the win, and tailback Jaquez Alexander-Dedeaux enjoyed one of the best performances of his career as he ran for 214 yards on 22 carries and tallied three touchdowns. Jayden Acker paced the Pirate defense as he recorded seven tackles for loss as well as three pass breakups for Pass Christian.
Other scores from The “Southern Six”:
Bay High 42, Pearl River Central 26
Petal 42, Long Beach 14
Stone 21, Quitman 14
West Jones 42, Poplarville 0
Centreville Aca. 34, St. Patrick 21
