No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast has some ground to make up in the final round of the NJCAA Tournament Preview after finishing the first round seven shots back of leader Parkland.

The Bulldogs shot 3-over in the first round on Swan Lake Golf Resort’s Black Course, with Parkland posting the only under-par score.

“As a team, we just kind of got it around,” Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. “I think we scored better than we played in some spots, so I was proud of that. We put a lot of work since being up here on our short game, and it bailed us out when we didn’t have our best stuff all day.”

Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College) led Gulf Coast with a 4-under 68. He’s one shot behind Illinois Central’s Quinn Cox.

Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium) shot even-par for the third straight competition round and is tied for 11th. Harlan Yerger (Fr., Oxford/Oxford) finished 3-over and is tied for 28th. John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) and Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) are tied for 41st another shot back.

Garner Seymour (So., Biloxi/Biloxi), playing as an individual, is tied for 15th at 1-over.

Campbell fired six birdies on the national championship course.

“Stanley has been driving the ball great,” Thornton said. “It’s giving him opportunities to score, and he’s been able to take advantage of that. He’s played really well since we got up here.”

Illinois Central is tied for third with Murray State at 5-over. No. 9 Heartland is in fifth another shot back. Kirkwood, co-No. 1 with Gulf Coast in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division II Coaches Poll, is in sixth. No. 6 Des Moines Area is 10th, and co-No. 9 Heartland is tied for 14th.

“I think it’s going to play a little tougher tomorrow,” Thornton said. “The wind is supposed to pick up a little bit, so I think if we clean up a few mistakes we can do something. I don’t think we played particularly bad today.”

The final round is a 10 a.m. ET shotgun start.
